The Style Polaroid

As the end of the year approaches and days get shorter it is yet again the time of misty mornings and cold days that make one want to stay home cuddled up in bed with a warming mug of freshly brewed tea.

This year I decided to take the coziness with me outside in shape of the incredible invention that is the faux fur jacket. I have always had a soft spot for clothing items that make you look and feel like a fluffy cloud, even better when items like that become socially acceptable to be worn outside. Not that I ever cared what people thought was socially acceptable but you get the gist.

November is that amazing time inbetween Halloween madness and freezing Christmas evenings and in the last couple years I have come to love the gloomy time of transition, when it's not quite the right moment to jam along to "All I want for Christmas" in the car and the sugar overload experienced towards the end of October. I might be pulling a proper white girl with this but let's be honest, there's no November without having overpriced Pumpkin Spice Lattes in crowded coffeeshops with bad WiFi while the fog outside turns the world into a dusky place of pre-wintery wonders.

It's also the time of the year in which I enjoy getting lost in poetry and books the most and in which my journal is filled with quite a bit of self-written material. I guess it's the atmosphere and the chilly November breezes that make this time of the year so special for me.

Autumn has come and hit us with its most beautiful colour and to be quite frank, I do think that this year’s autumn is one of the most beautiful ones I’ve experiences in a while. The intensity of colours and the variety of red and yellow shades is astounding and I am often left speechless on my way to work when I drive down an avenue being surrounded by what seems like being nature’s fire.

And while the world explodes into warm colours it is also time again for one of my favourite clothing item: Sweater. I cannot think of anything better than cuddle up in a cozy sweater and just be surrounded by the warmth of comfortable fabric. But because sweaters are omnipresent from October onwards one might get a little bored after a while, which is why I love experimenting with unusual cuts and extroverted prints.

Even though the sweater isn’t in a vibrant colour it still attracts attention due to the puffed sleeves and the shimmery fabric that subtly sparkles in the sunlight. Combined with a pair of combat boots it’s a perfect look for fall days spent outside, enjoying the last warm rays of sunshine before the winter. A time for all things pumpkins, an almost unhealthy amount of tea and cuddly blankets which I thoroughly enjoy.

I also want to introduce you to a new member of the Style Polaroid - team, my new photographer and friend Raphael Nast, who is a young talent that still needs to be discovered. I enjoy working with him to the fullest as he turns work into leisure time.

The last two months have been a months of extremes, challenging, exhausting and restless. Not only have I started working full time at one of Austria's biggest newspaper, which I can still not quite wrap my head around, but also have I moved into my very first own flat.

Having your own apartment, one big space all to yourself is a pretty satisfying thought and once it's all set and done and one doesn't have to live out of cardboard boxes anymore it indeed is - but the journey towards a furnished flat is more of a pain than actual pleasure.

There's a difference between moving into a flat share and furnishing an empty, new apartment. When moving into a flat share you're aware of the fact that your living situation is going to change again sooner or later and that you won't stay in mentioned flatshare for more than a couple years. Due to this mindset one is willing to accept flaws and downsides more easily as it is temporarily which doesn't mean that you can't turn a tiny room into a personal safe haven because that is what should be done with one's living space. Living in a flatshare also has its numerous perks. You don't only share a living space you also share bills for things such as water and heat and the occasional glass of wine when one flat mate's friend has pissed off mentioned flat mate and needs to have a good ol' rant about it. Or pizza evenings. Or sushi evenings. Flat shares are quite an amazing invention indeed.

But then you figure out that there's this moment in life in which you realise that it's time to have something of your own, something that has your name and character written all over it. Something that is simply just you and not a combination of various people trying to squeeze their individuality into one space with others. And then you move out.

I'm not saying finding a suitable apartment is difficult, I'm saying finding a flat is nothing less than a nightmare. Before you find the place you feel like your heart could feel at home, you'll walk into several dark caves, down sketchy hallways with weirdly flickering lights and end up standing in smelly living rooms with yellow stains on the walls you won't even dare ask where the hell those came from. Then there's going to be moments where you feel like you've found the place to be until you find out the flat is either a skam or in parts of the city that are going to make you feel like you've arrived in the middle of nowhere.

That sigh of relief when you have finally found what you've been looking for is probably more satisfying than buying the first item for the new space. What I had to learn the hard way in the last couple months is that one works hard for their money everyday but in the apartment world three to four digit numbers are something one is going to be confronted with on a daily basis. And it hurts. Especially one's wallet. There's so many things to pay for you're not aware of when living in a flatshare during uni days. And suddenly the only people who ever send you letters are companies asking you for yet another monthly transfer of your precious savings.

And then theres still the flat itself. When moving into a flatshare you can at least expect to have a fully functioning kitchen and bathroom including things such as cutlery and pans. And then there's the grandparents stepping in generously donating the ugly cutlery and plates they've stored in their basement for half a century. It might be ugly but you take it anyway. Not only because you love your grandparents and it makes them happy but also because eating soup with your fingers is painful and impractical. And because it doesn't matter because flatshare kitchens are literally the equivalent to a flee market. On a positive note, they are flee markets with character and we are all lowkey obsessed with vintage vibes from the 60s/70s.

Now that one has their own space one is still very much willing to accept kind donations of family members simply because there's nothing else in one's flat yet anway but suddenly you find yourself being a lot more picky. When moving into your very first own flat you suddenly feel like your possibilities of personal expression are endless and you finally have the ultimate gift of choosing what you want to turn your flat into.
After several nervous breakdowns over furniture being unreasonably expensive, taking ages to deliver, almost breaking apart while trying to put the pieces together or being not deliverable at all I was finally able to move into a flat that might have looked like a flat but was more of a mess than anything else.

ADVICE ALERT:

If I have scared you off with my moving experience, don't be. If anyone ever tells you moving is a piece of cake either has had people doing it for them or has never moved at all. Moving into your own place is undoubtedly one of the best feelings in the world, You'll get this overwhelmingly pleasant feeling of independence and suddenly you feel as if you could rule the world. Suddenly there's a space you can put your heart and soul into and that is entirely one of your own, safe haven full of your own ideas and your creativity. New beginnings never come easy but it's important to tag along and take the challenge because the outcome is going to be unexplainably rewarding. Moving takes time and patience and even if you feel like nothing's ever going to look the way you want it to be, don't panic, everything will fall into place.

You always have that irrational dream of moving into a fully furnished and decorated flat but in reality you live on a not very comfortable construction site before all of that happens. It's been a wild and stressful ride and there's still so many things that need to be done and fixed and there's still so much money and effort that has to be put into my new small world of my own but it wouldn't be me if I wasn't looking forward to a bit of an adventure.

Each society is shaped by people. People with beliefs, dreams, visions and good (and bad) intentions. But what if people have created a society that has entirely shifted away from something generations have been trying to work towards eagerly? We're living in a world in which standing up for equality amongst all living creatures and the rise of women has become an omnipresent goal of those supporting these ideas and has created communities taking all their chances. But does working for something including such a positive message mean to cross boundaries which shouldn't be crossed and does it have to involve using methods of conflict that entirely defeat the purpose of an idea that is supposed to spread positivity, raise awareness and display the power of the individual in a non-violent way – because verbal violence is as destructive as causing someone physical harm.

Women are strong, independent, smart and full of enlightening, impressive ideas and positivity – and so are all the other groups of people who are seemingly forgotten. The ones trying to make their voices heard shouldn't have to level down to those trying to make them fail, because no one should have to lower their pride by forgetting who they are just to make those who are simple-minded understand. Our society preaches about strong words such as feminism and equality and wants to make women finally get the respect they deserve, but our dignity, our pride and our wisdom shouldn't get lost along the way. Simply because it would be the exact opposite of what this world is aiming for. The negative energy within a community is more toxic than attacks from the ones opposed to new ideas because a comnmunity poisoning itself is very likely to lose a fight. A movement that is supposed to stand strong and tall and make use of their knowledge and visions keeps weakening itself by their members attacking one another over irrelevant, small, individual differences in life-choices, battling each other verbally, forgetting that they are all part of the same team. Differences are natural, they define who we are as people but as a community one should work together as one. For a common goal, for equality, respect and acknowledgement in a world still defined and led by men. As a sister society.

On Wednesday I had the pleasure to be invited to an amazing event called “Lillet Pique Nique d’Eté” hosted by the brand Lillet, who produce an alcoholic drink you can mix with other ingredients to create incredibly delicious summer drinks. The picnic was organised in order to present their latest creation “Mademoiselle Lilly”.

Already on arrival I was fairly impressed by the stunning location just outside the city, “Aiola im Schloss”. The event was supposed to be held outside but due to the unpredictable weather it was relocated to the first floor of the majestic building on a small hill. The room was decorated beautifully, with pillows spread across the floor and flowers creating a magical atmosphere. The guests were all dressed in white and everyone was fully enjoying themselves, appreciating the view from the balcony overlooking the green landscape and taking pictures in a corner, using polaroid cameras.

The food and drinks that were served exceeded my expectations by miles and by adding Creme Bruleé and macarons to the menu it fit the theme of a French picnic in the countryside perfectly.

On this evening I met lots of other bloggers from my home town, who I had an amazing time with and I enjoyed meeting people who I share a passion with. I will have linked their blogs below as the blogger scene is all about supporting each other and I genuinely loved spending time with those amazing girls.

Working in an environment in which dress codes exist can be difficult during the hot summer months as you are challenged to find a balance between business look and comfort clothing. Very often, offices are cooled down to freezing temperatures and as soon as you step outside the sweat starts dripping down your neck. In order to avoid struggling with temperature difficulties, light baggy trousers and cardigans or dusters to easily throw on are the options to go for.

By dressing up casual baggy trousers, an office-appropriate look is created and you’re still making sure you will not get uncomfortable during the day or when leaving the office.

A dash of colour adds a twist to every boring office look and makes you protrude even in a working environment. Just because you work indoors and in an office doesn’t mean you don’t get to show your personality through your style, on the contrary, it gives you various opportunities to play with the dress code demanded by your company.

This year June and July have so far been the most stressful months I have ever experienced and exams and work have taken their toll on my mental and physical well being. Now that I can finally tick another term off my list of successfully completed uni semesters I can finally take a step back and reflect on the fact that I am now officially closer to my mid twenties than my early twenties.

It might sound ridiculous but turning 23 has undoubtedly caused a change in my world view. During the last year I was given some of the most amazing opportunities in my life, I was given time to travel, time to learn and time to discover. Now that full on adult life has come terrifyingly close, it makes one question if one has lived their youth to the fullest and even though I know that life doesn’t end after eventually graduating from university, it still makes you look back on what you had years ago, when rent and phone bills didn’t really matter at all. Even though you undoubtedly gain the luxury of freedom in terms of your decisions and the value of parental guidance, crossing that line from being a teenager to being a young adult does indeed carry responsibilities that one has to come to terms with. When I realised that even Harry Potter is now 20 years of age I have to admit that I indeed felt a tiny bit old.

In the past year I have finally fully understood what it means to live. That it’s not about the money you have but about the adventures you have, the things you discover and the stories deriving from them. Everyone always desperately keeps looking for their purpose in life and forget that there’s no  real purpose at all. The purpose of life is that it’s meant to be lived, lived, enjoyed and loved. And nothing other than that really matters.

The outfit:

As a lover of everything vintage, I am always on the hunt for new pieces to stock up my wardrobe with. As I had been looking for oversized, comfortable shorts for a while I was happy to stumble across these amazing shorts from Levis which are technically 2 sizes too big but exactly fulfil their purpose. In combination with a light of shoulder bodysuit and golden slides, a casual summer outfit is created that can be worn up and down with adjusting the accessories.
