The Style Polaroid

The world around us is moving and changing at a fast pace, with barely any time to sit down and really reflect on the things in our daily life that affect us mentally and physically. Every move we make seems to have to be planned and tied to a satisfying result. The modern human does barely let himself have time periods inbetween during which he just cleans his mind from all the negativity and various stress factors occurring on a daily basis.

We are constantly pushed into such a tight and stressful routine by not only ourselves but the demands and guidelines we are confronted with by our own society that we often forget that our bodies are not machines that can work on full power mode over a stretched period of time. We tire. We feel poorly. We are capable of emotions and feelings. We aren’t meant to work our way through  our lives just to look back at it and realise we didn’t really enjoy the ride at all.

Mental Hygiene is Important.

Especially during my uni years I realised more than ever how much joy life could bring if one really embraced its opportunities. Balancing hard work, dedication, mental health and social life is a challenge, but manageable - and to be able to maintain a balance, we have to start the journey within our minds. A clear and healthy mind is the base to a human’s general well being. Which is why it is of immense importance that we consciously decide to spend time with no one but ourselves because ‘me time’ is the key to a strong and fierce mindset.

I started doing yoga when I first started uni and I thought I needed something other than just average strength and cardio training to really tap my full potential. I figured that in contrast to the training I usually do, yoga would help me find my inner strength and peace that had nothing to do with training muscles really. So I started doing yoga. Not every day, sometimes not even every week, just whenever I felt like I needed to take a step back and give my mind and body a break. I know that some people do yoga every single morning and force it into their routine, but I don’t think the amount of times you do it determines the effect.

Mental health and well being is something as individual as the human itself, which is why adopting someone else’s routine can backfire and lead to more stress rather than relieving it. Finding your own perfect routine is key when trying to balance mental health and stressful daily life, which is why listening to body signals is significant to long term success.

Letting Go.

Whenever I feel down or feel like I need to ease back into feeling mentally and physically strong, I sign up for a yoga class and just let the teachers guide me through the depths of my mind where I know my mental strength lies and I enjoy being around people doing the exact same thing. It is actually incredible how much impact the right words and instructions can have on your personal well being if you really try and let yourself sink into the situation, genuinely embracing it.

I am not trying to sugar coat the fact that I myself sometimes end up overworking myself until I feel both mentally and physically drained because let’s keep it real, we all do sometimes. What is important is to not try and  push your body further until the breaking point.

It is a cliché that yoga classes are boring and a waste of time. It is simply what you make of it and how much you get yourself into the situation. Even if you feel like this type of sport and way to relax your body and mind isn’t for you, you should still give it a chance and at least try. Most yoga studios offer free or reasonably priced trial lessons so you can see for yourself and check out their program and institution without signing up for anything just yet. Especially in Graz but other cities as well free yoga classes are held regularly at various occasions, you will be able to find events like this on social media sites such as Facebook.

Don't be biased. Don't be scared. You can't do anything wrong. Just give it a try. Let your mind find its inner peace a bit more, no matter how.

Sorting out one's wardrobe is essential and should be manifested in everyone's schedule at least twice each year. Admittedly, there are definitely things more enjoyable than digging through piles of clothing, trying to decide on what to keep and what to toss. I consider season change the perfect occasion to find out what has been lying deeply hidden in the depths of my drawers for quite some time undeniably collecting dust.

Raiding through one's wardrobe is a generally unpleasant piece of work to do but after looking at the finished result you will be glad that you convinced yourself to do it. Not only are you creating new room for new pieces for the upcoming season, you will also be able to either make someone happy by donating your clothes or surprise your bank account by selling the items on flee markets or various second hand clothing websites.

Following a system

When re-adjusting my wardrobe I tend to follow a certain system in order to keep things organised and stay on top of things. Additionally, every unpleasant task is easier to bear when there's music playing in the background which is why I tend to turn up the volume on my record player and jam to my favourite vinyls while categorising my clothes.

Generally, I tend to just go through my wardrobe in sections. As I have organised my clothes by colour and purpose, sorting out the pieces I don't necessarifun experience I often invite a friend over to have someone to chat with and debate over whether to keep a piece or not, and when there's a glass of wine or two involved, sorting out clothes doesn't seem like such a bad way of spending your free time anymore.
ly wear anymore does get undeniably easier. I take out all the clothes of one particular section and place everything in front of me to get a quick overview.  To make decluttering a

After displaying everything on the bed I usually just categorise the items into three sections: Keep, Toss and Uncertain. Especially in terms of the "Uncertain" pile I always rely on the honest opinions of my friends or my mum (because there's literally not a person more honest than my mum).
This process is repeated with the rest of the sections in my wardrobe until I have compiled all the clothes that have exceeded their life span in my wardrobe.

Donating, Selling or Reusing?

Obviously, not every tossed item in your wardrobe is worth being sold or donated. When selling items online or on a flee market, it's important that the pieces are reasonably priced and match the condition and quality of it. When donating, it's less important that the pieces are branded or high maintenance, but should always be intact and wearable. I sometimes notice people carelessly throwing ragged, old clothing that is ready for the bin into charity bins and it has me fuming inside every time because just because a person might be dependent of clothes given to charity does not equal them wanting to wear clothes which should rather be recycled and used as cleaning rag.

Especially old, worn out and ripped cotton shirts can easily be turned into cleaning wipes by simply cutting them into squares which is what I have done multiple times already. After usage you can simply put the rags into the washing machine and reuse them again. That way you created something new and useful out of old pieces of clothing.

I personally love donating my clothes as I often keep my clothes for several years and at some point I am aware that pieces have gone out of style or show signs of usage and just wouldn't be bought if I tried to sell them. When their condition is still fine, I generally drop the clothes off at Second Hand Stores or charity shops that support locals who have low income. That way I can get rid of some pieces in my wardrobe and help people in the process.

We are fortunate enough to live in a part of the world that is shaped by general wealth and access to all the important things needed to lead a life without restriction in terms of health care, food supply and material goods. What we aren't allowed to forget and overlook is that even though we live within a thriving economy, wealth always comes with poverty as well. Which is why supporting local charities is highly important to give people a chance to find their way back into society. Donating clothes you don't need anymore but are in good condition might help a family to provide their adolescent children with clothes for school or work experience and job applications.

Being able to live ones dream is a feeling that cannot really be described with words. It’s surreal, mind-blowing, overwhelming and intoxicating and it fills your heart and mind with so much pure and genuine joy it feels as if it was close to bursting.

As a lover of fashion and all things style, fashion week has always fascinated me and left me in awe multiple times a year, when the new trends for the upcoming year were presented on the runways of the world. I have had my blog for four years and originally started it as a platform to improve my writing and to share my thoughts and opinions on all things life.

I do believe that all of us have this secret bucket list inside our heads that we try to work off throughout our lives, some points rather manageable, others more difficult to achieve. Sitting front row at a fashion show at Fashion Week always seemed to be unreachable and more of a dream than reachable reality and if someone had told me a couple years ago I’d end up not only sitting front row at Berlin Fashion Week but being introduced to multiple highly influential members of the fashion community, I would have probably laughed at their face.

But… admittedly, the last two years have left me in constant disbelief on what amazing story my life has become and I never get tired of emphasising just how grateful I am. I would have never believed that such a small, irrelevant person like me could achieve all the things she’s always dreamed of doing as a kid and teenager and my life has really only just started. While writing these lines I can already feel myself tearing up again because I just cannot comprehend how lucky I am to get to be living this kind of life.

A Form of Art.

Attending fashion week was an amazing opportunity given to me by work and I knew that it was a chance I had to take to show how much passion the subject of fashion is to me. Before leaving I was determined to create quality content not only our readers and my colleagues would like, I also wanted to prove to myself that I could do this.

The level of anxiety this whole project gave me when I realised that I was really going to Fashion Week is indescribable and I was profoundly terrified of maybe, eventually messing up. But all of the fear was unfounded. I might even go as far as saying that I had the best time of my life. Obviously, it was work and stressful and tiring and exhausting, but it still was the best time of my life.

I was surrounded by people who are just as passionate about fashion as I am, who consider fashion an incredibly diverse form of art and who have a unique appreciation for the matters of how much you can define yourself as a person with the items you choose to wear. I met young, aspiring people with a vision and strength and willpower to fulfil their dreams and I was allowed to speak to numerous inspirational members of the fashion industry that still haven’t fallen for the dangers of mainstream.

Nevertheless, it’s undeniable that a very large area of the fashion industry is ruled and defined by superficiality, jealousy and arrogance that I truly cannot support in any way. For me fashion is a beautiful way of creating a new You every single day and showing your inner self to the outside world. Money doesn’t define if a person has style or not, all it takes is the ability to create new looks no matter the price. But the majority of those who have grown into the fashion business and have shaped it with their opinions and their actions are those who still live for what fashion really is.

Wonderland

What I have noticed though is that the bigger the designer the bigger the show. I was thoroughly impressed by what Austrian designer Marina Hoermanseder created on the grounds of E-Werk in Berlin. On arrival, guests were welcomed with drinks and a small fun fair that had been built on the area, including a smaller version of a ferris wheel. Designers do have the pressure of offering extraordinary things to keep people talking about them and doing it in such a creative and fun way rather astounded me in a positive way. Also, bring on the drinks at 10:30AM.

Fashion Week can be described as some sort of real life Wonderland, far away from reality but still so connected to the world outside of fashion business that designers aspire to impress. Dipping into this experience was incredible, fun and rather opened my mind, showing me that fashion is still about what I enjoy most about it, when you meet the right people.

Ever since I started working full time, weekends have become a time I cherish. Meeting friends, going out for breakfast or lunch, strolling through the city centre, going on an adventure and just enjoying life has turned into something rather special because of the little spare time life offers you. For these special occasions I try to come up with not only comfortable but stylish ways of displaying my style and extraordinarily patterned trousers are a part of my personal fashion-go-to just as much as one of my various hats.

A large amount of my trouser collection consists of patterned items in all shapes and colours, simply because I think that mixing a good quality pair of trousers with a plain t-shirt or blouse immediately turns a simple outfit into an actual look. What I had been missing in my wardrobe were trousers with a gingham print and the perfect fit. Gingham has been on my radar for quite a while but I wasn't sure if I could pull it off. Stepping out of one's comfort zone is not only a challenge but also highly important and healthy for one's personal growth and becoming a stronger, more confident person already starts with small things such as daring to step up your style game a notch every once in a while.

Courage and confidence that is won in a certain area can easily be used in every other part of daily life as well. Most people are too scared to take a step forward and give themselves the chance to outgrow themselves because their anxiety stops them or society makes them believe that they will never amount to anything. Trying something new shouldn't be about anyone but oneself. People still care too much about what their environment thinks of them but at the end of the day all that counts is how one felt within themselves.

A week ago everyone was in complete and genuine bliss when spring seemed to have finally overpowered one of the coldest winters I have ever experienced, only to be shut down a couple of days later by another wave of unbearable cold and more snow. At this point I genuinely think that I have forgotten what warmth and sunshine feel like and the lack of vitamin D is starting to affect my generally rather positive and happy-go-lucky mood. Making the best of what is this never-ending winter I stepped up my layering game because at some point jumpers just don't do the job anymore. Layering a chique oversized blazer with a warm cotton turtleneck has become a look I am rather fond of as it gives me the feeling of being bundled up but still delivering elegant vibes, which is important in my job. Especially when having a day of meetings and interviews ahead, including one of Austria's most popular comedians. Save to say I was a bit nervous but he turned out being the most casual and down to earth guy who I chatted with about tour life, his family, broken furniture and the perks of feeling home in more than one place.

I never get tired of emphasising how grateful I am that I get to do what I love most for a living and that apparently I am doing a rather good job at it. It has made me become so incredibly confident in myself, my abilities and my place in this world that I have even started to stop caring about my flaws and weaknesses. It amazes me how much doing something you love changes you as a person and how important it is to accept yourself for who you are. I also believe that my confidence has started to reflect in my attitude and the way I approach the world and people in general. When finding yourself you suddenly find all that you need in the world to feel settled and good as well. Happiness is key.

The rest of the year always passes by within the seeming blink of an eye - but January always feels like a century of its own. Grey days on end with a sudden hint of sunshine every now and then are not only tearing on one’s motivation, that lack of vitamin D makes you feel all tired and generally exhausted as well.

Which is why I try to at least brighten up my day with outfits that remind me of the upcoming spring and the seasons ahead that bring sunshine and joy. I’m not gonna lie, black and white dominates my winter wardrobe but I’ve recently come across some pieces that not only make me crave spring but also make grey winter days seem automatically brighter. One still can’t simply wish the cold away but one can at least try spread some spring vibes here and there. Without having to freeze obviously.

Let’s talk the real issues here: If we are being entirely honest with ourselves, we will soon realise that society treats women not only unequal but also with a ludicrously low level of respect. As long as I can remember, the male gender has always been associated with strength, confidence and perseverance. Attributes that are generally attached to women, however, reflect an image I consider rather questionable. Obviously, being kindhearted and loving are characteristics of a human being that are undeniably delightful and can only be wished for, but shouldn’t being kind be something everyone should be anyway?

If not born into a family with the right mindset that teaches their daughters that they are just as strong, powerful and persistent as mentioned male gender, girls are much too often raised being taught that their mind is less important than their looks. Because looks apparently make girls and women into what they are. Unfortunately and sadly enough, it is not surprising that such a state of mind hasn’t vanished off the earth yet because one look at what is presented to us on a golden plate everyday via various media sources opens one’s eyes immediately. Human mankind is manipulated into believing that people have to look a certain way, otherwise they are not considered pretty. People with glasses or braces are bullied and ridiculed as being different or ugly or weird and on the other hand there’s models on social media being praised for wearing invisible braces they don’t need and fake glasses they don’t need either. Because it’s cool. Because it looks good when you’re popular and famous. Meanwhile, a fourteen year old teenager cries herself to sleep because she feels different and people avoid her because she looks like a nerd. Because she wears glasses and likes books more than she likes humans. And apparently liking the nerds isn’t cool. Being cool is important these days.

No. It isn’t. What is really important, is ourselves, and everything we are, with all our weaknesses and flaws and chubby tummies and spots and noses that are too big or too pointy or too small. With all our moles and freckles and crooked teeth and bad eyes.

What is being cool anyway? Being cool is to embrace not only yourself as a person but also the things you enjoy. It took me a long time to stop caring what other people thought about me and the things I like doing most and it made me a much happier person. Once you realise that the way you are is exactly the way you should be, your confidence will find its way to you all by itself. It’s a gradual process that can’t be reached overnight. It takes time and the realisation that the world out there isn’t always the way it’s presented.

My Life Advice:

Make a list. Whenever someone or something makes you feel bad about yourself take that list and add one thing that you like about yourself. It doesn’t matter if it’s something about your looks or a character trait, write it down. Even the tiniest things on the list are relevant because every time the list will grow longer and one day you’ll realise that everything about you is amazing, and beautiful. Humans aren’t required to be perfect in any way. As long as we do what makes us happy, it will reflect in our behaviour and suddenly the world’s opinion won’t matter anymore. You’ll find yourself needing the list less and less, I promise.
Because in the end, we’re all queens inside as long as we embrace them.

Because fitting in isn’t important. BEING UNIQUE IS.

As the end of the year approaches and days get shorter it is yet again the time of misty mornings and cold days that make one want to stay home cuddled up in bed with a warming mug of freshly brewed tea.

This year I decided to take the coziness with me outside in shape of the incredible invention that is the faux fur jacket. I have always had a soft spot for clothing items that make you look and feel like a fluffy cloud, even better when items like that become socially acceptable to be worn outside. Not that I ever cared what people thought was socially acceptable but you get the gist.

November is that amazing time inbetween Halloween madness and freezing Christmas evenings and in the last couple years I have come to love the gloomy time of transition, when it's not quite the right moment to jam along to "All I want for Christmas" in the car and the sugar overload experienced towards the end of October. I might be pulling a proper white girl with this but let's be honest, there's no November without having overpriced Pumpkin Spice Lattes in crowded coffeeshops with bad WiFi while the fog outside turns the world into a dusky place of pre-wintery wonders.

It's also the time of the year in which I enjoy getting lost in poetry and books the most and in which my journal is filled with quite a bit of self-written material. I guess it's the atmosphere and the chilly November breezes that make this time of the year so special for me.

Autumn has come and hit us with its most beautiful colour and to be quite frank, I do think that this year’s autumn is one of the most beautiful ones I’ve experiences in a while. The intensity of colours and the variety of red and yellow shades is astounding and I am often left speechless on my way to work when I drive down an avenue being surrounded by what seems like being nature’s fire.

And while the world explodes into warm colours it is also time again for one of my favourite clothing item: Sweater. I cannot think of anything better than cuddle up in a cozy sweater and just be surrounded by the warmth of comfortable fabric. But because sweaters are omnipresent from October onwards one might get a little bored after a while, which is why I love experimenting with unusual cuts and extroverted prints.

Even though the sweater isn’t in a vibrant colour it still attracts attention due to the puffed sleeves and the shimmery fabric that subtly sparkles in the sunlight. Combined with a pair of combat boots it’s a perfect look for fall days spent outside, enjoying the last warm rays of sunshine before the winter. A time for all things pumpkins, an almost unhealthy amount of tea and cuddly blankets which I thoroughly enjoy.

I also want to introduce you to a new member of the Style Polaroid - team, my new photographer and friend Raphael Nast, who is a young talent that still needs to be discovered. I enjoy working with him to the fullest as he turns work into leisure time.
