The Style Polaroid

We are already three weeks into the new year and most of us have probably already been thinking about the travels we would like to squeeze into our schedule this year. Unfortunately, most of the time it’s not the time we’re lacking, but the money. Especially when you’re young you’d just love to take on the world and visit a new country everyday but we all know how challenging it is to save up money for a single trip, especially when it additionally involves plane ticket. Today I want to show you how I calculate my budget and how I decide, which destinations to add to my travel plan and where to find great deals.

Calculating your Budget.

Obviously, travel budgets vary from person to person, depending on if someone’s still a student or already working full-time, living alone or still at one’s parents’ house. But I believe saving money when travelling is something every young person would like to do.

What I tend to do is keep track of my income and expenses and calculate the average expenses I have every month, including rent, food, car insurance and petrol as well as all the bills that need to be paid. Depending on how much is left for you individually, I recommend thinking of a certain amount of money you can spare each month to put aside for travels (or really any other thing you want to save up for). I personally, depending on other expenses that might occur in a month, try to put aside 100 to 200 Euro a month just for travelling, especially when I know that I want to go to a destination far from home. By putting away money in a consistent manner, you will increase your travel budget month by month almost unnoticed and it won’t feel as bad on your bank account once you pay for flights, hotels, hostels or bus and train tickets.

I also tend to put the money I am gifted for Christmas or my birthday aside, as it’s another really good addition to your travel bank.

A fun motivation to save up for me is putting the money into fun, lockable money boxes as looking at them everyday encourages me to really pull through and not take the money out to use it for something else. I recommend emptying it every couple months though for rather obvious reasons. No one should have such a big bulk of money lying around in their home.

Choose your travel time wisely.

As I am already working full time, the time I am able to go on holiday is rather limited, which is why I need to choose my travel destinations and the dates I am going wisely. I tend to plan one or two bigger holidays a year, depending where I am going, and sneak in a couple weekend getaways more spontaneously.

The time you travel definitely does make a difference when going abroad, especially when visiting countries who mainly depend on tourism. When travelling to a hot country such as Egypt, Greece or Dubai, it definitely makes sense to choose a date outside the main season as flights are cheaper and hotels often have special offers during that time to fill their rooms. The best time during off season are probably the weeks before and after main season as the weather can still be expected to be warm and pleasant but the prices will have dropped by a lot already and can save you a lot of money. I know that choosing such travel dates is sometimes difficult due to uni or school but when I was at uni and knew I was going on holiday during a normal uni week, I tried to not miss class any other time during the semester so being away or twice was considered absolutely acceptable.

Make the most of your holidays.

In Austria people who work full time usually have 25 days of holidays they can use throughout the year. What I tend to do is take a close look at the calendar each January to figure out how to place my holidays best and get the most out of the five weeks of holidays. Obviously, arranging your holidays needs to be properly accommodated with your colleagues but usually it is not difficult to find an agreement. When placed between a national holiday and the weekend, one can therefore easily get a week of holiday out of three days off work.

Cheap Flights needed.

Especially in Europe, flights have become very affordable in the last couple years due to the amount of low budget carriers flying to destinations all across the continent. When looking for flights I always tend to use websites such as checkfelix.com to compare prices and figure out the best time to travel as their calendar offers a feature showing you days with the lowest prices. This has saved me a high amount of money when travelling by plane.

Set yourself a Budget for your trip.

Even though planning a trip beforehand is already highly important, setting yourself a limit when travelling is even more important. It happens too easily that one loses track of the expenses ones they are abroad and come back having spent a lot more money than priorly anticipated. Which is why I suggest that it is important to inform yourself well about the prices in terms of food and drinks, as well as the entry fees of attraction you want to visit at your travel destination. This will give you an overview and an idea how much money you’ll need once you have reached your destination and will prevent you from experiencing bad surprises that would have been avoidable.

Calculate a certain amount of money you will approximately need to cover daily needs such as food and drinks and you won’t be ending up spending more money than you actually want (and have).

At the end of the day each person has their individual way of saving up for travels and I am just sharing tips and tricks I use to be able to get around the world as much as possible during the year.

Christmas is my favourite time of the entire year. The world turns into a magical place filled with lights, incredible scents and a wondrous feeling of peace. Love, joy and happiness lingers in the air and even though it sounds cliché, one can really see how people change during Christmas season. Even though commerce and capitalism have cast a shadow on this peaceful season during the last decades, the most important thing about Christmas has fortunately not been forgotten.

Most of the year, people find themselves trapped in hectic routines, dealing with challenges, sorrows and pain but somehow all of this gets pushed aside for a tiny little while, while people simply enjoy each other’s company, spend time with their loved ones and let joy take over their stressful lives for once.

Many of us have the luxury to really be able to enjoy the festive season to the fullest and are surrounded by the ones closest to our hearts but it shouldn’t be forgotten that a large group of people can’t celebrate Christmas the way they'd wish to. And as Christmas is the time of giving and sharing, I think it’s important that we who are privileged enough to spend this season the way we imagine, share a spark of our joy and happiness in order to make others happy – even if it’s only for a short moment.

Four Tiny Ways to Make a Stranger Happy.

Pay for someone’s coffee.

As a coffee lover I enjoy spending my spare time meeting friends at coffee shops to catch up and spend some quality time. Next time you grab your favourite hot drink at your local coffeeshop, ask the barista what the customer after your ordered and tell them you want to pay their order as well. Believe me, they will be delighted hearing, that they got a coffee for free and it will make you feel amazing, knowing you have done a good deed. It’s such a simple and affordable gesture that can make another person’s day.

Leave your valid bus ticket at the ticket machine.

As I usually use my bike to get around, I barely ever use public transport. Whenever I do, I have to take a ticket that’s valid for an hour. As I barely ever max out the time the ticket is valid, I always leave it at the ticket machine in order for someone else to find it and use it without having to pay. That way, someone gets a ride for free and is certainly happy about it and the ticket gets used to its maximum.

Hold the door open for someone.

This might seem like such a natural and obvious gesture but I have witnessed people smashing the door into other people’s faces so often that I feel like it deserves to be mentioned in my list as well. Holding the door open for someone sometimes really has a more positive effect on the other person than one might actually expect. Especially elderly people generally think that the youth was raised without manners, so such a simple gestures might not only prove them wrong but also put a smile on their face.

Same thing counts for holding the door of the bus open for someone running towards the bus station. I always feel eternally grateful when someone does that for me. Be kind and make someone still catch their bus.

Help a mother with her pram.

Let’s be real, mothers are real superheroes. They manage to juggle their daily routine, a household, a job and their children in ways most of us young adults can’t even comprehend. Especially during Christmas time their stress levels are on an all time high due to Christmas shopping, busy streets and crowded spaces. Carrying a pram down annoying shopping centre stair cases while still holding grip of shopping bags and possibly another child is a challenge by itself. To make that mother’s day, you just have to ask if you can help her carry the pram up or down the stairs and I promise, it’ll make their day as such a tiny gesture helps them so much. Same goes for public transport once again, as getting a pram into a bus is often quite difficult as well.

Extra note to all my readers from GRAZ:

Right next to Flann O’Brien’s Pub is a lovely, small Christmas market with the most amazing Secret Santa idea I have ever seen. One can grab a note from one of the market stands and write a small wish and their name and address on it and can hang it on the market’s Christmas tree. Someone else can then grab the note with the wish if they want to and make a stranger happy in the process. I really recommend participating as it is such an amazing way of spreading the Christmas spirit and making a stranger happy.

Ways to Help People Less Fortunate Than Most of Us

Donate food to animal shelters.

Especially during and after Christmas animal shelters are packed with animals who were supposed to be presents but were returned because people realised the responsibility and amount of time and attention a pet needs, is too much for them. Not only do animal shelters run out of space, they also run low on food for the animals a lot of the time. By donating dog and cat food you can help those shelters to feed the animals.

SIDE NOTE: DON’T GIFT ANIMALS FOR CHRISTMAS. GETTING A PET SHOULD BE A MUTUAL FAMILY DECISION AND EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE AWARE OF THE RESPONSIBILITY HAVING A PET COMES WITH. SIDE NOT OVER.

Donate toys to child care centres and children’s hospitals.

Many children have to spend their Christmas away from home or are separated from their families, which is sad and devastating. Many of us still have old toys which are in perfect condition stored in boxes in the attic or the basement. Instead of those items continuing to collect dust on some shelf, pack up the toys that still work and drop them of at a child care centre or a hospital. Inform yourself beforehand if your chosen institution is allowed to accept your donations though so you won’t be disappointed if you’re rejected.
By donating toys you can clear out space in your storage and make small children happy on Christmas.

Donate food to those who can’t afford a meal.

At our supermarkets you can often find boxes right after the checkout where you can drop food such as bread, pasta and other longer lasting items in. Those items are then given to poor families who can’t afford meals or sold at so called “social markets” where food can be purchased for a smaller price.

Support a charity of your choice.

Even though I believe we should spread love and kindness all year round I think that Christmas is the perfect time to support a charity that stands for a cause close to one’s heart.

I hope you’re all enjoying the festive season and hope all your dreams come true. Be loving and treat people with kindness.

Yours, Simone xx

The world around us is moving and changing at a fast pace, with barely any time to sit down and really reflect on the things in our daily life that affect us mentally and physically. Every move we make seems to have to be planned and tied to a satisfying result. The modern human does barely let himself have time periods inbetween during which he just cleans his mind from all the negativity and various stress factors occurring on a daily basis.

We are constantly pushed into such a tight and stressful routine by not only ourselves but the demands and guidelines we are confronted with by our own society that we often forget that our bodies are not machines that can work on full power mode over a stretched period of time. We tire. We feel poorly. We are capable of emotions and feelings. We aren’t meant to work our way through  our lives just to look back at it and realise we didn’t really enjoy the ride at all.

Mental Hygiene is Important.

Especially during my uni years I realised more than ever how much joy life could bring if one really embraced its opportunities. Balancing hard work, dedication, mental health and social life is a challenge, but manageable - and to be able to maintain a balance, we have to start the journey within our minds. A clear and healthy mind is the base to a human’s general well being. Which is why it is of immense importance that we consciously decide to spend time with no one but ourselves because ‘me time’ is the key to a strong and fierce mindset.

I started doing yoga when I first started uni and I thought I needed something other than just average strength and cardio training to really tap my full potential. I figured that in contrast to the training I usually do, yoga would help me find my inner strength and peace that had nothing to do with training muscles really. So I started doing yoga. Not every day, sometimes not even every week, just whenever I felt like I needed to take a step back and give my mind and body a break. I know that some people do yoga every single morning and force it into their routine, but I don’t think the amount of times you do it determines the effect.

Mental health and well being is something as individual as the human itself, which is why adopting someone else’s routine can backfire and lead to more stress rather than relieving it. Finding your own perfect routine is key when trying to balance mental health and stressful daily life, which is why listening to body signals is significant to long term success.

Letting Go.

Whenever I feel down or feel like I need to ease back into feeling mentally and physically strong, I sign up for a yoga class and just let the teachers guide me through the depths of my mind where I know my mental strength lies and I enjoy being around people doing the exact same thing. It is actually incredible how much impact the right words and instructions can have on your personal well being if you really try and let yourself sink into the situation, genuinely embracing it.

I am not trying to sugar coat the fact that I myself sometimes end up overworking myself until I feel both mentally and physically drained because let’s keep it real, we all do sometimes. What is important is to not try and  push your body further until the breaking point.

It is a cliché that yoga classes are boring and a waste of time. It is simply what you make of it and how much you get yourself into the situation. Even if you feel like this type of sport and way to relax your body and mind isn’t for you, you should still give it a chance and at least try. Most yoga studios offer free or reasonably priced trial lessons so you can see for yourself and check out their program and institution without signing up for anything just yet. Especially in Graz but other cities as well free yoga classes are held regularly at various occasions, you will be able to find events like this on social media sites such as Facebook.

Don't be biased. Don't be scared. You can't do anything wrong. Just give it a try. Let your mind find its inner peace a bit more, no matter how.

Sorting out one's wardrobe is essential and should be manifested in everyone's schedule at least twice each year. Admittedly, there are definitely things more enjoyable than digging through piles of clothing, trying to decide on what to keep and what to toss. I consider season change the perfect occasion to find out what has been lying deeply hidden in the depths of my drawers for quite some time undeniably collecting dust.

Raiding through one's wardrobe is a generally unpleasant piece of work to do but after looking at the finished result you will be glad that you convinced yourself to do it. Not only are you creating new room for new pieces for the upcoming season, you will also be able to either make someone happy by donating your clothes or surprise your bank account by selling the items on flee markets or various second hand clothing websites.

Following a system

When re-adjusting my wardrobe I tend to follow a certain system in order to keep things organised and stay on top of things. Additionally, every unpleasant task is easier to bear when there's music playing in the background which is why I tend to turn up the volume on my record player and jam to my favourite vinyls while categorising my clothes.

Generally, I tend to just go through my wardrobe in sections. As I have organised my clothes by colour and purpose, sorting out the pieces I don't necessarifun experience I often invite a friend over to have someone to chat with and debate over whether to keep a piece or not, and when there's a glass of wine or two involved, sorting out clothes doesn't seem like such a bad way of spending your free time anymore.
ly wear anymore does get undeniably easier. I take out all the clothes of one particular section and place everything in front of me to get a quick overview.  To make decluttering a

After displaying everything on the bed I usually just categorise the items into three sections: Keep, Toss and Uncertain. Especially in terms of the "Uncertain" pile I always rely on the honest opinions of my friends or my mum (because there's literally not a person more honest than my mum).
This process is repeated with the rest of the sections in my wardrobe until I have compiled all the clothes that have exceeded their life span in my wardrobe.

Donating, Selling or Reusing?

Obviously, not every tossed item in your wardrobe is worth being sold or donated. When selling items online or on a flee market, it's important that the pieces are reasonably priced and match the condition and quality of it. When donating, it's less important that the pieces are branded or high maintenance, but should always be intact and wearable. I sometimes notice people carelessly throwing ragged, old clothing that is ready for the bin into charity bins and it has me fuming inside every time because just because a person might be dependent of clothes given to charity does not equal them wanting to wear clothes which should rather be recycled and used as cleaning rag.

Especially old, worn out and ripped cotton shirts can easily be turned into cleaning wipes by simply cutting them into squares which is what I have done multiple times already. After usage you can simply put the rags into the washing machine and reuse them again. That way you created something new and useful out of old pieces of clothing.

I personally love donating my clothes as I often keep my clothes for several years and at some point I am aware that pieces have gone out of style or show signs of usage and just wouldn't be bought if I tried to sell them. When their condition is still fine, I generally drop the clothes off at Second Hand Stores or charity shops that support locals who have low income. That way I can get rid of some pieces in my wardrobe and help people in the process.

We are fortunate enough to live in a part of the world that is shaped by general wealth and access to all the important things needed to lead a life without restriction in terms of health care, food supply and material goods. What we aren't allowed to forget and overlook is that even though we live within a thriving economy, wealth always comes with poverty as well. Which is why supporting local charities is highly important to give people a chance to find their way back into society. Donating clothes you don't need anymore but are in good condition might help a family to provide their adolescent children with clothes for school or work experience and job applications.

The following text was inspired by the movie/book "Love, Simon" or "Simon vs. The Homosapien Agenda" and the fact that it is Pride Month. No matter if one is part of the LGBT community or not, supporting it and standing up for human rights is something I will always get behind and speak up for because we all deserve support and appreciation when it comes to things that are important to us.

This is about love. About all kinds of love. About love as a force, love as a magnet, love as a
keeper, a rock and the wild sea shaking the shore in its core. About how love is diverse and different and something that has been attempted to be described but has never been fully mastered. About love as something that is the closest thing to actual magic that humanity knows. Because as much as people have tried, the answer has never really been found - why love is stronger than any force on earth.

When looking at the generation I’m growing up in, I look at a powerful group of human beings, full of bright ideas and visionary minds. Open minded and curious, accepting and courageous, willing to stand up for their own beliefs. And within this bright community with a better future in their minds and hearts, within this force, something new was created. Lives full of pride, reckless strength and new found confidence.

This month the world celebrates those who have been thought different for as long as records reach back, those who have had to face boundaries and hatred, injustice and resentment. They used to live their lives silent, or were immediately shut down, they have had to fight for what’s right and for a world without inequality.

Who are we to define what love really is – a force that is more than we will ever be. We don’t get to decide who we love and who we don’t, the only thing that does in the end is our heart all along. Love is diverse, a spectrum we can impossibly grasp, so who are we to decide for someone other than ourselves. Love doesn’t come easy for anyone on earth, it’s a challenge and adventure, sometimes makes our hearts burn.

The beauty of this moment, the time that we’re in, is that it’s our turn to change it and unite forces within. Because what I notice more and more amongst my peers is astounding support for each other and those we’re in love with.

I have to be frank and rather honest too, I did indeed have to educate myself on LGBT matters and everything that’s involved because as sad as it is, standing on the outside sometimes makes you oblivious to what people go through. It’s still a privilege of the straight to step outside and just BE and only the friends I have made over the last couple of years who are an active part have actually opened my eyes about  the real issues they have to deal with.

But even though life for them is still hard, as I mentioned before, times are slowly changing. People are open about who they really are, encouraged by a world that’s started to accept. Accept that love is diverse and not just black and white, a rainbow of people, quite literally. Although this has not been my fight I feel like everyone should stand up, stand up for what’s right and for a bright future to come.

In the end it’s all love, no matter what kind, love doesn’t change or differentiate. We love who we love with all its beauty and pride, so why don’t we all stand together and unite as what we are in the end: An incredible  bunch of humans growing up in a world full of diversity and beauty. To end this with a quote of a person I love: You now have the chance to be whoever you wanna be.

To love. To diversity. To an open minded world.
Be proud. Be strong. Be you. Always.

Happy pride month to all those who have found themselves, are still yet to find themselves or are just in it to support it for the long run.

You don’t always need to travel far to experience world’s beauty, sometimes it can be found right around the corner only a short bike ride away. Humans tend to have the urge to get away and leave their homes behind in order to find peace of mind and discover new places.

Ever since living abroad in the UK I have realised how little we care about the beauty that surrounds us on a daily basis. We start taking our environment for granted forgetting to consciously look at the wonderful place we’re living in because everything inside of us is just constantly urging for the far away lands of unknown mysteries.

When living in the UK I tried to get around as much as possible because I wanted to get to know the country and its people and encounter things I hadn’t seen before. When talking about my trips with my UK friends, the answer that I most frequently got when asking if they had been there was “No”. This fact made me realise how much we take our home countries for granted. We don’t see the point in exploring what is around us everyday, we don’t make the time for a 30 minute drive to leave the city behind and go on adventures in the forests and mountains we call our home. Instead we make time to plan trips abroad, for the sake of crossing things off our bucket lists and for the sake of telling friends that we’ve travelled the world.

Travelling is one of the most amazing inventions mankind has ever had. But travelling, in my opinion, does not only involve those trips we look forward to for months and which take us places that are so different from what we are used to, it’s also the trips we spontaneously decide to do. Those trips to castles embedded into the skyline of your own home town that you haven’t come around to visit in five years of living here.

Travelling far is exciting, and important. But exploring what one calls home is just as important. You develop a newly found appreciation of the world around you and suddenly you notice all the small details that make your home special that have been overlooked for years because our mind has gotten so used to seeing them every day.

The beginning of the year is usually the time during which people start to plan their travels for the year, which sounds like a rather enjoyable way of occupying oneself as it makes one dream of new destinations that lie ahead and days off spent on some beach where the only sorrow one knows is to not forget to switch from back to belly when tanning every once in a while.

Well… and then your dreams of stress free booking are crushed by a trillion of websites offering all kinds of different things for every imaginable price level and you and up feeling as if your head might explode. Questions like “What if that’s a price trap?”, “That deal sound kind of fake?”, “Is this website trustworthy?”, “Is AirBnB worth the hype?” and “Wouldn’t it be better to just let someone at a travel agency do this?”

I’ll be answering all these questions today and hope that I’ll be able to not only help you with planning your next trip but also take away a bit of fear someone might have when it comes to booking holidays on the scary place that is known as the internet.

I have divided this post into sections for better structure. They can all be read together as a whole but can also be read individually if one section interests you in particular.

  1. Research is KEY
  2. Finding a Hotel
  3. Planning a Trip or Diving Straight into It?
  4. Hand Luggage or Bulky, Heavy Suitcase?

1) Research is KEY

Firstly, I am not a fan of travel agencies. They generally generate prices that are a lot higher than what you are offered on the internet for the same value simply because public service in involved. That doesn’t need much explaining. BUT I have to admit that travel agencies have their perks when it comes to trips that involve all inclusive accommodations and travels that go beyond the annual Europe trip to some capital city. If I was going some place like Bali, the Seychelles, the Maledives or somewhere else tropical where I have no clue what is to expect and what to even look for, I’d definitely recommend seeking professional help because no one wants to end up in some dirty, run down hell hole when going on holiday. That would sort of defeat the purpose and I’d also cry over the money that was wasted on a bad holiday.

City trips however, or general beach holidays, can easily be booked online entirely stress free when you start planning your trips at the right time. I have figured in the last couple of years in which I have not only rather unintentionally become the travel and booking “expert” for not only our family trips but trips with friends as well that starting to plan a trip WITHIN Europe approximately four months in advance makes the most sense - in terms of price AND time management.
Because one thing is essential about the whole booking process when you’re doing it yourself. IT TAKES TIME. AND PATIENCE. You can’t just book a proper trip on one day. It takes time to research and compare prices. You can literally save up to 150€ or more when taking your time to just browse through various pages on the internet.
My favourite websites to compare prices are booking.com, trivago.at and expedia.at. They are easy to use and give you every essential information you might need.

2) Finding a Hotel

Now the most complicated part might be finding the right accommodation. I am aware that everyone has individual preferences when travelling and that some people would never stay at a hotel but this is just the way I personally do it. I grew up always staying in hotels and am personally not very keen of camping and hostels as I find it rather gross sharing my bathroom with hundred other people (I have done it before, it wasn’t horrible, but I didn’t particularly enjoy it either and as holidays should be something you enjoy, opt for something that feels right for you). Before I choose a hotel I do my research on which areas in the city I wanna go to are convenient and preferably not too sketchy as I am a coward who gets easily intimidated and a safe area is just something I personally need to fully enjoy myself. When doing research, I tend to inform myself on the internet via travel reviews and blogs but first and foremost I always approach friends of who I know they know what I need and want and who have been to that place before so I trust their tips and recommendations.

Additionally I inform myself about the transport system, look up where bus lines and underground stops are located and check on the overall public transport system. Most people tend to always want to be right in the city centre, which might be convenient as everything might be in walking distance but also affects the price massively. Therefore I tend to rather choose hotels outside the centre which still have a good transport connection to the centre. I am going to Paris in exactly two months and we have managed to find a 4-star-hotel for 215€ per person with breakfast for three nights. I mean if that’s not a good deal.

Furthermore, I religiously read through reviews and comments on the hotels as those immediately give away the quality of the hotel because obviously hotels won’t be advertising their flaws on the internet. My favourite website for hotel reviews is holidaycheck.com as people can additionally add pictures to their reviews which raises the credibility of their comments and gives me an actual idea of the quality of the hotel

I have also come to LOVE a website called secretescapes.de which offers luxury accommodations for small prices as their offers change every week on Sunday or Monday, meaning you have a limited time to book but the value you get for the price is actually insane. I have booked hotels via Secret Escapes multiple times now and I have always ended up paying between 100 and 200€ for a four to five day trip in a 5-star-hotel, breakfast included (and upgrades too sometimes, we went to Vienna once and were upgraded into a suite that was bigger than my flat NO JOKE, the bathroom alone was the size of my living room I legit never wanted to leave that place again)
So, if you like a bit of luxury for a small price and are spontaneous when it comes to booking, I’d definitely recommend Secret Escapes, it’s honestly worth gold.

If hotels aren’t for you but you’d still like to enjoy a bit of comfort when travelling I highly recommend AirBnB. I am telling you it IS worth the hype. My best friend and I have decided to never book anything other than an AirBnb ever again after our trip to Amsterdam last year. It was our first time staying at one and I have fallen in love with those kinds of accommodations as it’s an amazing way of feeling just like a local and the prices are rather reasonable as well. Obviously, reading the reviews is yet again the key otherwise one could easily fall for a scam but the website is highly professional and so are the majority of the people offering entire homes or rooms in their own apartments.

3) Planning a Trip or Diving Straight into It?

Well, I assume the answer to this question highly depends on your personal preferences. I myself like to balance structure with adventure. I don’t like travelling to a new place entirely unprepared as it gives me anxiety and stresses me out but I don’t like trips that are planned from top to bottom either as it takes away the luxury of spontaneity. When doing city trips my friends and I tend to all write a list of things each one of us really wants to do, compare those lists and then decide what  we WANT to do, what we would LIKE to do and things that we could do when there’s time or when it’s convenient. Structuring a trip like this gives you an idea of what lies ahead of you but still gives you the freedom to change things up because you never know what you might stumble across when finally on the trip.

What I tend to do as well is to look up which sights or spots are in areas close to each other as I think it’s rubbish to travel all across town to cover just two or three spots when you can plan your day in a way you can stay in a certain area and use another day for another area across town. Obviously you want to see as much as possible but city trips are still supposed to be holidays and not some kind of alternate marathon. I mean I would very much like to still be able to use my feet after four days of being away.

4) Hand Luggage or Bulky, Heavy Suitcase?

I’ll be referring you back to the blog post I did back in June 2017 when I discovered the glorious invention of hand luggage trolleys and the awesomeness of travelling light. Honestly, I will never use big suitcases for city trips ever again. (Trips to the beach or trips longer than 5 days excluded I am still a woman at the end of the day)

Now that I have properly hyped myself up for my trips this year I hope this has helped you in some kind of way. Feel free to drop a comment on how you travel and where you’re planning to go this year.

40 hours of work every week AND handling my very last semester at uni at the same time. Sounds insane? Believe me, IT IS. More than once in the last couple months I have questioned whether this pace of life is still healthy or if I might have already become a caffeine driven zombie holding on to the very last bit of life. I have come to the conclusion that there's moments where it undeniably is a rather unhealthy way of living one's life and if I hadn't figured out a strategy to keep myself going I'd have probally already cried in a corner somewhere pitying myself, while pathetically rocking back and forth.

But that's not me. I am not a person who pities themselves. I am a person that gets stuff done. Which is probably the reason why I have survived until now with no damage other than the occasional lack of sleep.

I would have never thought I would end up in a position in which I would have to balance a full time job and my academic educational career because I always thought being employed at a newspaper or magazine is a dream I was still miles away from actually living. Turns out, all the unpaid, voluntary internships I did while still bein a full time uni student had quite an impact on me now being the youngest fully employed editor at a newspaper that has a circulation of a freaking QUARTER MILLION readers. I really think that has been one of the very rare moments in my life so far in which was utterly and entirely mindblown. And if I might add, it made me be rather proud of myself.
Being proud of yourself is also essential when it comes to handling stressful situations. It might not take the pressure away but it makes you feel good and content within yourself.

There'll come a day when it's all over

Balancing both a job and uni doesn't come easy. For a period of time you have to step back and put your social life second. Not for long and you should allow yourself to take breaks, but getting things done also demands spending precious free time on work you sometimes don't really want to do. I assume everyone can think of a better way of enjoying the little time after a day of work than spending it at home revising for upcoming exams. But: You're working towards something, and that's what should keep you going. One day more, one day closer to the finish line.

Discipline is the key, as difficult as it is.

All it really takes is time management and a large amount of discipline. When deadlines come closer it is important to not let your mind trick you into telling you that you're tired and exhausted, positive thinking really is the key to success. If you keep reminding yourself that this pressure lasts a limited amount of time and that you'll get to enjoy life even more after it's all over, it will be a game changer.

Eat, sleep and keep track of your routine.

What helps is not only trying to maintain a routine when it comes to eating and sleeping  but trying to schedule your work load in a calendar will help you keep track of the list of tasks you have to do.
And never lose sight of your GOAL.

Let’s talk the real issues here: If we are being entirely honest with ourselves, we will soon realise that society treats women not only unequal but also with a ludicrously low level of respect. As long as I can remember, the male gender has always been associated with strength, confidence and perseverance. Attributes that are generally attached to women, however, reflect an image I consider rather questionable. Obviously, being kindhearted and loving are characteristics of a human being that are undeniably delightful and can only be wished for, but shouldn’t being kind be something everyone should be anyway?

If not born into a family with the right mindset that teaches their daughters that they are just as strong, powerful and persistent as mentioned male gender, girls are much too often raised being taught that their mind is less important than their looks. Because looks apparently make girls and women into what they are. Unfortunately and sadly enough, it is not surprising that such a state of mind hasn’t vanished off the earth yet because one look at what is presented to us on a golden plate everyday via various media sources opens one’s eyes immediately. Human mankind is manipulated into believing that people have to look a certain way, otherwise they are not considered pretty. People with glasses or braces are bullied and ridiculed as being different or ugly or weird and on the other hand there’s models on social media being praised for wearing invisible braces they don’t need and fake glasses they don’t need either. Because it’s cool. Because it looks good when you’re popular and famous. Meanwhile, a fourteen year old teenager cries herself to sleep because she feels different and people avoid her because she looks like a nerd. Because she wears glasses and likes books more than she likes humans. And apparently liking the nerds isn’t cool. Being cool is important these days.

No. It isn’t. What is really important, is ourselves, and everything we are, with all our weaknesses and flaws and chubby tummies and spots and noses that are too big or too pointy or too small. With all our moles and freckles and crooked teeth and bad eyes.

What is being cool anyway? Being cool is to embrace not only yourself as a person but also the things you enjoy. It took me a long time to stop caring what other people thought about me and the things I like doing most and it made me a much happier person. Once you realise that the way you are is exactly the way you should be, your confidence will find its way to you all by itself. It’s a gradual process that can’t be reached overnight. It takes time and the realisation that the world out there isn’t always the way it’s presented.

My Life Advice:

Make a list. Whenever someone or something makes you feel bad about yourself take that list and add one thing that you like about yourself. It doesn’t matter if it’s something about your looks or a character trait, write it down. Even the tiniest things on the list are relevant because every time the list will grow longer and one day you’ll realise that everything about you is amazing, and beautiful. Humans aren’t required to be perfect in any way. As long as we do what makes us happy, it will reflect in our behaviour and suddenly the world’s opinion won’t matter anymore. You’ll find yourself needing the list less and less, I promise.
Because in the end, we’re all queens inside as long as we embrace them.

Because fitting in isn’t important. BEING UNIQUE IS.
