The Style Polaroid

Working in an environment in which dress codes exist can be difficult during the hot summer months as you are challenged to find a balance between business look and comfort clothing. Very often, offices are cooled down to freezing temperatures and as soon as you step outside the sweat starts dripping down your neck. In order to avoid struggling with temperature difficulties, light baggy trousers and cardigans or dusters to easily throw on are the options to go for.

By dressing up casual baggy trousers, an office-appropriate look is created and you’re still making sure you will not get uncomfortable during the day or when leaving the office.

A dash of colour adds a twist to every boring office look and makes you protrude even in a working environment. Just because you work indoors and in an office doesn’t mean you don’t get to show your personality through your style, on the contrary, it gives you various opportunities to play with the dress code demanded by your company.

This year June and July have so far been the most stressful months I have ever experienced and exams and work have taken their toll on my mental and physical well being. Now that I can finally tick another term off my list of successfully completed uni semesters I can finally take a step back and reflect on the fact that I am now officially closer to my mid twenties than my early twenties.

It might sound ridiculous but turning 23 has undoubtedly caused a change in my world view. During the last year I was given some of the most amazing opportunities in my life, I was given time to travel, time to learn and time to discover. Now that full on adult life has come terrifyingly close, it makes one question if one has lived their youth to the fullest and even though I know that life doesn’t end after eventually graduating from university, it still makes you look back on what you had years ago, when rent and phone bills didn’t really matter at all. Even though you undoubtedly gain the luxury of freedom in terms of your decisions and the value of parental guidance, crossing that line from being a teenager to being a young adult does indeed carry responsibilities that one has to come to terms with. When I realised that even Harry Potter is now 20 years of age I have to admit that I indeed felt a tiny bit old.

In the past year I have finally fully understood what it means to live. That it’s not about the money you have but about the adventures you have, the things you discover and the stories deriving from them. Everyone always desperately keeps looking for their purpose in life and forget that there’s no  real purpose at all. The purpose of life is that it’s meant to be lived, lived, enjoyed and loved. And nothing other than that really matters.

The outfit:

As a lover of everything vintage, I am always on the hunt for new pieces to stock up my wardrobe with. As I had been looking for oversized, comfortable shorts for a while I was happy to stumble across these amazing shorts from Levis which are technically 2 sizes too big but exactly fulfil their purpose. In combination with a light of shoulder bodysuit and golden slides, a casual summer outfit is created that can be worn up and down with adjusting the accessories.

Travelling might be one of the most exciting and most emotionally and visually rewarding things one could occupy themselves with but it is equally as challenging and exhausting. I am not referring to the exhaustion one experiences after three days of fitting as much cultural input into a 24 hour window as possible, challenge already starts with the packing.

I am not lying when saying that suitcases indeed are one of my very own personal nightmares but after four years of travelling back and forth between the UK, my parents’ home and my home in Graz you are definitely forced by life to get used to it. As many of you might be aware of, I travelled to Amsterdam last week as I had never been to the Netherlands before and wanted to cross another European capital of my bucket list. Done that. Check.

Travelling was different this time, not only because my best friend and I decided to stay at an AirBnB for the first time in our lives, it was also different in terms of how we handled our luggage. Generally, I am a person who never travels light as I always struggle with completely unsubstantiated anxiety that I might forget something or might not have packed something I desperately need in three days of being abroad. You can almost taste the sarcasm in the previous sentence because I wish I understood how my own mind works sometimes. Before drifting off into an entirely different sphere I want to get to the point. Normally, I always book my flights with luggage included. This time, as we were on a budget, we decided we would only travel with carry-ons. I expected my unpredictable self to start stressing over such an unimportant detail but surprisingly I didn’t. Maybe I have finally started to do adulting correctly, even though I am still not entirely convinced.

As you might have already figured out, this post is not entirely going to be about fashion but it is supposed to be a guide for everyone who struggles with travelling with nothing but a carry-on or has never done it before because they were too scared to try. I am adding one thing in advance: Learning to travel with nothing but a carry on is going to change your life in a positive way. It will save you tons of money and it will also make travelling a lot easier for you.

Travelling Light?

It is common knowledge that carry-ons are not allowed to exceed a certain size and weight. In terms of the size you should definitely stick to the rules as you might end up having to check in your luggage late and believe me, cash-strapped people do not want to put such a heavy burden on their credit card. In terms of weight though, airlines and airports have become very generous as long as they don’t witness you sitting on your carry-on trying to close it. Our carry-ons had about 9.5kg when we flew back home and everyone was completely fine with it. So don’t panic whenever your carry-on has one or two kilos too much.

Planning and choosing wisely.

The magic of combination is the key to not only travel lightly but also still look good during your days abroad. Basic tshirts, jeans, cardigans and a leather jacket are life savers to take on city trips. Basic white and black tshirts can easily be worn up and down and can be combined with either leather jacket or a cardigan, which means by taking two tshirts you already have four outfits to choose from. Light jackets don’t take up much weight or space and can be used to layer underneath the leather jacket whenever the wind, which was omnipresent in Amsterdam, gets unbearable. My carry-on contained a pair of jeans, a skirt, two tshirts and a bomber and a pair of loafers for a warm day. The rest I had with me I was wearing and I was perfectly fine. The trick is to really plan your outfits and take things which look good with multiple items in your wardrobe.

Beauty Bags.

Beauty bags are generally the heaviest items in a girl’s suitcase but half of the things one takes with them on holiday, doesn’t get used anyway. No one needs three eyeshadow palettes for a three day stay. Choose one palette of which you think the colours match your outfits most and leave the rest at home. Do not forget that you also aren’t allowed to take bottles with you that contain more than 100ml. Drugstores usually sell tiny travel bottles of literally everything, which saves time, space and weight and you can use them up the next time you travel.

Accessories.

Don’t take jewellery with you at all or again choose the items you take wisely. Again, choose pieces that match the majority of your clothes and you might even be fine with one bracelet and a small set of ear rings. If you’re doing a city trip every piece of unnecessary jewellery will annoy you anyway. This also applies to handbags. Best to take on city trips are small rucksacks, as they look cute, are available in every shape and colour and you can fit a lot of items in them. Don’t even try to bring an additional bag, it’s very unlikely you will use it and it is just gonna take another 0.5kg off your 8-10kg limit.

I will definitely continue travelling with only a carry-on as it simply makes the journey from the airport to your home and back so much more relaxed and enjoyable as you basically avoid struggling with a huge, heavy suitcase in public areas. Obviously, this strategy only applies on short city trips that don’t last longer that five days as it might get difficult to handle a full on beach holiday with nothing but a carry-on but you can always give it a shot I guess.

After April mostly being rather unpleasant in terms of weather conditions, taking it to the level where I had to get out my winter coats once again, I was more than relieved when May greeted us with open arms and amazing weather.
Lately I have found myself getting rather bored by constantly wearing numerous variations of skinny jeans, which is why I gladly and gratefully embraced the current move towards slightly more experimental types of trousers. Fabrics like linen and silk are not only rather comfortable to wear, they also radiate an easy-going everyday elegance that can enhance a look immediately. Another advantage of these types of trousers is that they can both be dressed up and down, depending on the event they are worn to. Loafers or heels are a perfect addition to the overall look and not much additional accessories are needed to complement it as especially the trousers function as a statement piece themselves.

With the sun constantly bringing the joys of spring in the last couple days, it is finally time to remove the warming winter coats from the wardrobe and replace them with pieces more suitable for sunny days spent outside. Even though spring is a genuinely amazing season in terms of fashion, it can indeed turn out to be quite tricky to dress appropriately and in ways that won’t end up with people getting a cold. The mornings and evenings can still be undeniably chilly, whereas the rest of the day tends to be warm enough for one to step outside with one layer only. Which is the reason why spring, just like autumn, is an amazing period for layering and shoes like loafers. Loafers and espadrilles won’t make you get cold feet but will also be light enough for one not to sweat during the day when walking the city in the sun.

Furthermore, it is finally acceptable again to wear smartly choses touches of colours and put on jeans in lighter colours as the mud and the dirt from the past winter have finally fully disappeared. Sweaters are generally perfect for unpredictable spring weather and can be combined and styles in  uncountable different ways, the classics including either a leather jacket or a simply duster or trench coat.

As hard as it is for me to admit because I have always had the opinion that style is defined by one’s individual personality, the fashion world is still primarily shaped by the latest trends. Trends that are not always as affordable as we would like them to be. Whilst the blogger world is granted almost unlimited access to the latest fashion must haves, the fashion loving working class is forced to look for less expensive options to create outfits of similar quality. Fortunately, high street fashion brands have picked up on this phenomenon and have developed concepts such as high fashion collaborations and affordable collections to make the high fashion trends accessible for the majority of our community.

Statement belts have been taking over the fashion world, and bloggers have been opting for the omnipresent Gucci monogram statement belt, the majority of the world’s fashion lovers have been looking for a more affordable option. Multiple online retailers and high street fashion stores have added double bucket belts to their collections and stocks, which makes them a perfect alternative to the high fashion brand statement belts. Combined with simple, monochrome colours and casual street wear the belts can be turned into an it piece that adds a special edge to every outfit. Especially high waisted jeans fit the purpose of the statement belts.

In addition to the belt I added my latest favourite in terms of accessories. Not only do I enjoy choosing my rings and necklaces to match my outfits, I also love changing up my watches in order to make them go with the style I’m going for every day. In this case I went for my new, black and gold Johnny Loves Rosie watch as it fit the overall look and matched the colour of the belt buckles.

There are those days in life on which we couldn’t care less about dressing up and trying to create a look that makes heads turn on the streets. Sometimes not only our minds need detoxing and relaxation, our physical being does as well crave well deserved, laid back quality time.
Most people’s definition of chilled, cozy outfits involves a pair of sweatpants to get into the right mood. Sweatpants have found their way back into fashion in the last two years by designers creating street wear pieces with a certain edge, which has resulted in an increased acceptance amongst the general public when it comes to wearing them as an everyday look.

I still believe, however, that comfort mustn’t necessarily be connected to sweatpants. Chilled outfits can already be created by combining trousers in a soft, cozy fabric with an oversized sweater in a colour and fabric of choice. Finished off with a pair of sneakers that fit the colour scheme of the outfit, a relaxed every day look is achieved. A pair of boxer braids does the job of perfecting the laid back street style look and add an additional bit of comfort. (But, girls, let’s be honest, we mainly braid our hair to get those annoying strands out of the way.)
